Madlib & Freddie Gibbs: Piñata by Jeff Jank
I'm loving everything about this artwork from Jeff Jank for Piñata, the full-length collaboration between producer Madlib and lyrical heavyweight, Freddie Gibbs. The zebra fur serves as a fitting frame to the documentary-style photo of Gibbs, sitting stoic in a neighborhood park with his own black and white stripes.
Typical of Jank, the typography is simple, clean, and straightforward, letting the graphic concept take center stage. Futura Bold looks great as always, complemented well here with a book-weight slab serif (Rockwell?).
Perhaps the best feature of this lovely package is the record itself—a gorgeous black-and-white duotone marble that'd make any serious vinylhead swoon.
A bonus for the diehard fan, the Knicks single has some similarly exotic artwork. Zebra stripes are replaced with a super luxurious tiger fur pattern — the orange hues here and in the faux-cast-metal label contrast nicely against the blue monochrome image of Gibbs. The artwork is a nice addition to the full album packaging, and has a cohesive yet distinctly sexy vibe. 💯
